Hyundai i20

During the last 10 years we have seen Hyundai mature into a mainstream car manufacturer.

With new products that have been increasingly in tune with what European customers want.

Just two-generations ago its cars could be fairly described as four-wheeled ‘white goods’, for people who didn’t really care about driving or what the car said about them.

But the transformation that began with the first model to use the ‘i’ prefix along with a number continues to gather pace.

Fiat 500X

The formation of FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) earlier this year marked the end of a tortuous trail for Chrysler Corp in the US.

Dissolution of DaimlerChrysler and a stand-alone period under a venture capitalist group led to bankruptcy administration in the 2008-2009 crash. Fiat Group invested and, having bought out the remaining share-holders, now has full ownership as integration of the two groups gathers pace.

Jeep is one of Chrysler’s iconic brands and the Cherokee compact SUV launched earlier this year sits on a Fiat-derived platform used first for Alfa Romeo’s Giulietta.  Similarly, the new Fiat 500X (due here in April) shares its underpinnings with the Jeep Renegade (scheduled to reach showrooms in February) - the first small Jeep.

Škoda Fabia

The new Škoda Fabia marks 120 years since the Mlada Boleslav works were founded by Laurin & Klement in 1895. Acquired by the Škoda Group in 1925, Volkswagen took a majority stake in the car division in 1991.

Škoda entered the mass-market 80 years ago with the 1934 Popular. Lightweight bodywork (no separate chassis) and overhead-valve engines denoted a very modern car. Almost 20,000 were sold. Post World War II its successor was the 1101/1102 Saloon. Roadster and commercial variants followed. The Roadster was soon dubbed Tudor becoming the common name for the whole range. Produced until 1952 with a 1.1-litre four-cylinder engine, it could actually reach 62mph.
