A journalism student has won a £1,000 prize, a driving experience at Silverstone, and work experience at some of the UK’s top automotive publications for a video produced on her course.

Emily Brown, who graduated from Cardiff university this summer, took the automotive journalism module on her course, and created the video, which was eligible for the John Arfon Edwards Memorial.

The report examined the impact of diesel emissions rules on modern agricultural vehicles, and was presented with a cheque on Friday (September 23) at the university.

The prize was set up by Welsh Motoring Writers in memory of one of the group’s founder members, and its first treasurer, John Arfon Edwards, who died in 2014, and is open to students taking the automotive journalism module at Cardiff university.

Sponsored by Porsche Cars GB, the prize also includes a driving day at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone, and two weeks’ work experience at Haymarket Media, with time spent on What Car?, Autocar and Pistonheads.

Cardiff’s unique Automotive Journalism module provides in-depth knowledge and skills for the next generation of transport and business writers.

Welsh Motoring Writers vice-chairman Simon Harris said: “Emily’s report was very interesting to our judging panel, dealing with an aspect of diesel emissions we don’t often hear about. It was pleasing to learn something new as well as enjoy a well-written and well-produced news feature.

“John Arfon Edwards was a great advocate of education and training, and we know he would have been delighted that we are now investing in the future of our profession as a memorial to him. rewarding the work of students on this important course.

“We are also grateful to our sponsor, Porsche, for helping fund the prize and adding the highly desirable driving experience at Silverstone. And we also thank Haymarket Media for its support with the offer of work experience for the winner, and adding further prestige to the award.”
