Welsh Motoring Writers has welcomed a new member for 2017 following the successful application of Automotive World’s Xavier Boucherat, a previous winner of the group’s John Arfon Edwards Memorial Prize.

His membership was confirmed on Friday (February 17) as the group met for a milestone annual business meeting at Welshpool (Y Trallwng), where plans were mapped out for Welsh Motoring Writers’ 25th anniversary year.

The group takes particular pride in the fact that Xavier won the inaugural WMW John Arfon Edwards Memorial Prize in 2015. On completion of his post-graduate degree at Cardiff University School of Journalism & Media, he was offered a position at Automotive World, Penarth, and is rapidly building a reputation as a motoring and motor industry journalist. Membership of the Group overall now stands at 22.

Venue for the meeting was Welshpool’s Mid-Wales Airport – central Wales base for the country’s Air Ambulance. The occasion was marked again this year by a £500 donation to the service accepted on behalf of Air Ambulance Wales by Diana Rowlands.

Chairman Huw Thomas, vice-chairman Simon Harris, treasurer Graham Breeze and membership secretary Ian Johnson were confirmed in post for a further two years. Andrew Charman stepped down as handbook editor last year and Simon Harris has assumed that role with editorship of the website. The handbook improved year on year under Andrew’s stewardship and the meeting expressed its gratitude.

Huw Thomas said: “There could not be a more positive start to a pivotal year. We are fortunate in having a young cohort of outstanding ability and Xavier adds further to the richness of the mix. We are delighted to have him on board.

“Air Ambulance is crucial to saving lives in a country like Wales. Support is essential and we stand ready to respond. Simon, Graham, Ian and I appreciate greatly the confidence vested in us once more by members. We will do our best to repay that - benefitting, as always, from the advice and wise counsel of Terry Davies our president.”
