A journalism graduate has won a £1,000 prize a driving experience at Silverstone, and work experience at some of the UK’s top automotive publications.

Joe Pugh, of Abergavenny, was one of six MA students who opted to take the automotive module at Cardiff University’s School of Journalism. All six were eligible to compete for Welsh Motoring Writers’ John Arfon Edwards Memorial Prize in 2019.

Assignments submitted looked at issues around electric vehicles and autonomous technology, and Joe produced a three-minute video on the potential of electric cars in club racing, including interviews with race organisers and drivers.

After the presentation, WMW chairman Simon Harris and vice-chairman Huw Thomas, joined Joe in a Q&A session for new MA students beginning their journalism course at Cardiff.

Set up by WMW in memory of founder member and first treasurer, John Arfon Edwards who died in 2014, the prize is co-sponsored by Porsche Cars GB. It includes a driving day at the Porsche Experience Centre, Silverstone, and two weeks’ work experience at Haymarket Media with time spent on What Car? and Autocar.

WMW chairman Simon Harris said: “All six pieces of work submitted had their merits, but Joe’s piece stood out. It was informative, well constructed and expertly edited.

“It’s important for WMW as a professional association of journalists to encourage the next generation of automotive writers, and we hope the next intake of MA students at Cardiff, who witnessed the presentation, will be inspired to take their careers in this direction.

“We are indebted to Porsche Cars GB and Haymarket Media Group for their continued support in this prize.”
