Officers’ Mess at RAF Valley was the venue for this year’s Tom Pryce Memorial Trophy and Automotive Achievement Award conferred by Welsh Motoring Writers.

Presented on behalf of WMW by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant for Gwynedd, His Honour Huw Morgan Daniel, the Tom Pryce Trophy went to Wales’ premier RAF facility and busiest RAF base in the UK.  The Automotive Achievement Award to the Welsh Automotive Forum recognised its key role in Wales’ main industrial sector.

Group Captain Adrian Hill ADC RAF, Station Commander, said: “On behalf of all at RAF Valley, I am delighted to accept the Tom Pryce Memorial Trophy for 2012.  As in F1 motor racing, technology and science, mental and personal qualities are pushed to the limit here in the quest for excellence.  Fast-jet combat training at RAF Valley leads the world – no one comes close.  The spirit of Tom Pryce resonates distinctly with all that we do and we appreciate very much the privilege of joining such an illustrious list of recipients for this award.”

Tim Williams, chief executive of WAF said: “For the past 12 years WAF has worked tirelessly to champion the automotive industry in Wales in good and bad times.  The industry has survived through ingenuity and adaptability and is of vital importance to the Welsh economy.  WAF enjoys support across the country including from WMW. They promote the very best in Wales as we do in our industry.  It is with this partnership in mind that we are absolutely delighted to to receive the Automotive Achievement Award for 2012.”

WMW chairman Huw Thomas addeed: “This has been a great opportunity to recognise the outstanding intellectual and technological expertise at RAF Valley and its very special relationship with Wales over 70 years. ‘Athrylith ar Adennydd Chwim’ (Prowess Borne on Wings of Speed) indeed, as the inscription on this year’s Tom Pryce Trophy says.

“Similarly, there has been no more appropriate time to highlight the crucial role of WAF in the advocacy for and regeneration of the Welsh automotive sector.  This and an education sector fit for purpose will be the key to future prosperity.  Vauxhall Motors has been closely involved with WAF from the outset and we at WMW too are very grateful for its support again in this our 20th Anniversary year.”

Later on Friday (Nov 9) at WMW’s annual dinner at Bodysgallen Hall, the awards were commended and recipients congratulated by guest of honour the Secretary of State for Wales, Rt Hon David Jones MP.
