One of Wales's most successful car dealers was honoured with the Welsh Motoring Writers Automotive Achievement Award this month, while the Tom Pryce Memorial Trophy was won by double Olympic gold medallist Geraint Thomas MBE.

Steve Lloyd, managing director of Pembroke Dock's WP Lewis & Son, received the Automotive Achievement Award at a prize-giving ceremony held at Lamphey Court Hotel and Spa, near Tenby, while Mr Thomas, who was unable to attend, will receive the Tom Pryce Memorial Trophy at a later date.

Geraint Howell Thomas, MBE (29) is a Welsh professional racing cyclist who rides for the UCI WorldTeam Team Sky, Wales and Great Britain.

A track cycling world champion and Olympic gold medalist in the team pursuit, Thomas has also enjoyed success on the road, winning the 2004 Junior Paris–Roubaix, the 2010 British National Road Race Championships, the 2011 and 2014 Bayern-Rundfahrt, the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2015 E3 Harelbeke.

The Tom Pryce Memorial Trophy, from 1996, commemorates Wales’s greatest racing driver. A fire marshal ran into his path at the 1977 South African Grand Prix and both were killed. It is awarded to a Welsh man or woman for an outstanding contribution in the world of transport: land, sea or air. An undertaking or body with a special relationship to Wales is also eligible.

The Automotive Achievement Award, since 2010, recognises personal or corporate excellence in the automotive sector.
WP Lewis & Son has won Vauxhall Motors’ Customer Service Award in each of the four years since its inception.

It is the only dealership in Wales to have won the award and one of only four UK-wide. The company makes a significant contribution to the economic, social and cultural life of the area, continuing a tradition established by WP Lewis himself and for which he was awarded the MBE.

Mr Lloyd said: “I am delighted to receive this award on behalf of WP Lewis & Son and would like to dedicate it both to my grandfather and uncle. We are indebted to them for their foresight and commitment. I would like to thank the entire team for their excellent customer service and loyalty to the company. I am very proud of you all!”

The group also presented a special award to Vauxhall communications director Denis Chick, who marks 50 years in the automotive industry in 2015.

Cardiff-born Mr Chick said: “I was surprised but highly honoured to receive the wonderful Welsh slate plaque recording my half-century in this industry.

"The British motor industry has given me a fair share of ups and downs but never a dull moment - time has fled by. Being Welsh, it’s all the more pertinent to receive this from Welsh Motoring Writers, a group of friends not just colleagues in the industry. Heartfelt thanks to all."
